There is a large free car park which has space for around 20 -30 cars on the southern side of the mountain above the A40.
The initial part of the walk works its way through open land with a gentle slope and then it gets steeper and rocky as you get closer to the summit. No stiles on this route.

At the car park
We parked at the car park at the bottom of the walk and there are no cafe's, pubs etc. But you can walk all the way up from nearby Abergavenny and we highly recommend Coffi Lab on Frogmore Street in the centre of the town for a post or pre walk coffee if you walk from the town.
Sugar Loaf (Mynydd Pen-y-Fal) is a 596-meter (1,955 ft) peak in the Black Mountains, situated in the southeastern corner of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons) in Wales.The mountain is a haven for upland wildlife such as birds, as well as livestock that graze within the areas. It’s also a special area of conservation, and in order to protect the wildlife that lives there they ask that dogs please remain on leads whilst visiting. And as its a National Trust area you can look at their Pawprint Rating System for you to find out how dog-friendly your visit will be before you and your four-legged friend arrive. To help with this, they've created a new pawprint rating system and given all the places in their care a rating. You can find out more information about this on their website.Sugar Loaf is marked by a trig point and offers terrific panoramic views over the national park, it's a shorter walk than our normal ones but well worth the visit.Great views across beautiful Wales throughout the whole walk.
