Local Info

Reculver Beach is a small, tranquil stretch of shingle, backed by rocks and grassy areas, around 3 miles (ca. 5 km) east of Herne Bay. The remains of a 12th century church, with its two towers, known locally as “The Twin Sisters”, make a romantic backdrop and provide an excellent photo opportunity. The grassy area behind the church ruins is suitable for picnics, or just sitting and taking in the view across the sea. In more recent history, during the Second World War, the sea off the coast here was used to test the Barnes Wallis “dam-buster” bouncing bomb. There is also a small café and visitor facilities with toilets, next to the car park.

Author Review

This was a place I wanted to bring Maple for a very long time. I had been there previously, before I had Maple, and I knew how beautiful and peaceful the place was. The towers ruin add the historic and romantic backdrop to the visit. Once we arrived, around lunchtime, the place was slightly busy, mostly with families.

The carpark is just at the bottom of the Twin Towers and by the sea. The promenade along the ocean, is a bit narrow with no obstacles, with a mix of cyclists, dog walkers and families. Of course, Maple wanted to spend most of her time swimming. The beach is quiet and dog friendly. We basically had the beach to ourselves, and a few other dogs.

Overall, it's a great place to visit. There is a bit for everyone, from beach, park, history or just appreciate the great walk on the promenade.
