Parking

Free parking at Tyne Riverside Country Park at Newburn, we parked in the car park closest to the river (just past the Keelman Pub) but if this is full follow the road and there is another car park (also free).

Terrain

Almost entirely flat throughout, mix of gravel/tarmac tracks and well defined footpaths. One of these gets very muddy but is avoidable.

Water

There's easy access to shallow areas of the river towards the start of the walk in a couple of places. Further around the drop to the river is quite steep and the river can be deep with strong currents.

Poo Bins

Bins at the car park and in several spots along the Wylam Waggonway.

Local Info

There are quite a few dog friendly pubs either on or just off the route. Our favourites are The Boathouse in Wylam which has a big real ale selection and The Keelman in Newburn (only dog friendly in the bar area but has a big outdoor area). The Tyne Amateur Rowing Club's bar/cafe is open to everyone and very dog friendly!

Author Review

This is a very popular walk so it can get busy, especially on the Newburn side of the river. It's almost completely flat and good underfoot so makes a nice easy stroll which could be shortened if you wanted to. There's only 2 short sections next to roads, and dogs can be off lead for long stretches otherwise.

Start out at the car park and walk through the country park along the river, eventually you'll come to a point where the larger path goes to the right and a smaller one continues on. The smaller path is the way we normally go, it stays along the river and is normally quieter, but can get very muddy so if you want to avoid that you can follow the bigger track up to the road and then turn left to join the Wylam Waggonway which is tarmac for the full length between Newburn and Wylam. If following the riverside path there are a few places where you can join the waggonway, just follow the path up, you could also use this to make a shorter loop and walk back towards Newburn along the waggonway. There have been some land slips which mean you can't walk the whole way to Wylam on the riverside so you will have to join the waggonway eventually!

There are some fields that may have livestock to the sides of the path, but the path doesn't go through any of them. When you reach car park at Wylam cut through this and go through the entrance to cross Wylam bridge, then immediately turn left at the end of the bridge through the train station car park to get to the path at the far side which will take you to the riverside path on this side of the river. It's pretty much impossible to get lost on this path as you just have to make sure to stick to the main path next to the river. Quite a long stretch on this side is next to a golf course with no fencing so if dogs are off lead you'll need to make sure they don't stray on to it.

When you reach Newburn bridge follow the path underneath it before taking the path up to cross the bridge as this means you don't need to cross the road. The path across the bridge is quite narrow next to the road so take care when crossing. At the other side of the bridge turn left straight away and this path will take you back to the car park.
